Trigger Point Injections (TPIs)As a pain management or pain relief procedure, trigger point injections can relieve muscle pain caused by taught muscles that do not relax. Pain can occur locally, near the knotted muscle, or it can be referred to other areas of the body. Dr. McWilliams, who is a Diplomate in the American Academy of Pain Management, can determine if you suffer with trigger point pain and recommend therapy that will bring relief. PurposeLack of exercise, incorrect posture, vitamin deficiencies, sleep issues, and/or joint problems can predispose a patient to trigger point pain. Chronic muscle stress caused by sports or activity is also related to trigger point pain. Decreased range of motion and local or deferred pain are common symptoms. Many patients who suffer with trigger point problems have pain in the neck, shoulders, pelvic girdle, low back, or they have headaches, tinnitus, and/or temporomandibular joint pain. Trigger point injections aim to relieve constricted muscles and associated pain. Non-Surgical ProcedureTrigger-point injection is an effective treatment that involves introducing anesthetic (lidocaine, procaine, marcaine), steroid (kenalog), and saline into the muscular knots. However, botulinum toxin type A (Botox), vitamin B12, and homeopathic medicinals can also be used. Expect your TPI therapy to consist of at least three, 15-minute appointments, one week apart. Insurance may cover your TPIs, but they are very affordable without insurance, as well. |
