Prolotherapy is another therapy that is making a comeback in the United States since its development in the United States in the 1950's. Prolotherapy, aka, Regenerative Injection Therapy (RIT) is a therapeutic modality that aims to regenerate worn, aching joints of the knees, hips, ankles, wrists, elbows, and spine. The intra-articular cartilage becomes thinned and worn as a result of insufficient lubrication, advancing age, excess weight, excessive wear & tear, past trauma, smoking, and poor health. Worn joints become less stable and subsequently lax and tend to generate pain as fatigued muscles try to compensate. By injecting natural ingredients, glucosamine sulfate and dextrose into the joint, as well as procaine, we allow the painful, worn, and lax cartilage to strengthen, become more functional and less painful. The dextrose serves as an irritant that induces inflammation and thereby facilitates the new deposition of fibro-cartilage. This serves to strengthen the lax old cartilage, helping the joint to become more stable, and subsequently less painful. Average treatment sessions can take 30-60 minutes. The number of sessions depends on the severity of joint degeneration, but averages 3-6 series, approximately 3-4 weeks apart.
